DENR XII and PAMB-SBPS celebrate 1st Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) Week and its 24th Founding Anniversary

01:00 PM, March 01, 2020 (Sunday) - the DENR XII and members of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), in coordination with partner LGUs, NGOs, and other protected area stakeholders began the very first celebration of SBPS Week. This week-long activity lasted from March 01-05, 2020, filled with various events that promote recognition and awareness of SBPS as a protected area, and enjoined all protected area stakeholders to take part in the celebrations.

As a precursor to the week-long event, divers from all over the Philippines were invited to participate in the SBPS Week Dive Safari and Underwater Photography Competition from February 27-29, 2020. divesiteDive Sites were chosen from the coral reefs of Maitum, Kiamba, and Maasim, Sarangani Province, and with each day of the event, the Dive Safari moved from one Municipality to the next, eventually culminating at the Closing Ceremony on the evening of February 28, 2020, and was attended by Sarangani Tourism Council Chairperson Michelle Solon.

On the afternoon of March 01, mall-goers were greeted by the various exhibits showcasing the natural resources of SBPSmallgoers and interactive games put together by the joint efforts of DENR XII, LGU-Saranganitourism gameEnvironmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC) and USAID Project Protect Wildlife. These exhibits were officially opened to the public through a ribbon cutting ceremony facilitated by PENRO Sarangani Renato C. Domingo and ARD for Technical Services Ma. Socorro Lanto. Alongside these interactive displays, a Mass Dance Competition was held at Veranza Mall on that same afternoon, wherein three (3) dance groups dazzled mall-goers with their performances as they danced to the beat of the SBPS Hymn: Look ng Sarangani.

During March 02, Monday afternoon, the various aquaculture operators of SBPS were invited to attend an environmental forum and lecture facilitated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XII and DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) XII. This forum served as an avenue to remind aquaculture operators to practice good aquaculture practices and environmental compliance if they are to sustainably utilize the resources of SBPS. This Environmental Forum was the first of a three-part series lectures conducted from March 02-04, 2020, with the lectures on March 03-04, 2020 primarily focused on students and the academe. These two lectures emphasized the resources and history of SBPS, with the ECPC facilitating the lecture on March 03 entitled "Giants of the Sea", and the DENR leading the lecture on the next day, with their topic being Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.

To complement these lectures, the very first SBPS Law Enforcement Group (SBPSLEG) Summit enforncement summitwas held on March 03-04, 2020 at Venue 88, General Santos City. For Day One of the Summit, an Executive Session was held to discuss the Management Zones of SBPS and identify the gaps and issues hampering enforcement efforts, as supplied by the Coastal Barangay Captains of SBPS, LGU ENROs and Agriculturists, and relevant National Government Agencies (NGAs) who have enforcement jurisdiction in SBPS.

These identified issues in turn, were presented in a Legislative Forum held on the second day of the Forum, wherein legislators from the eight (8) LGUs of SBPS were invited to help address the issues and gaps identified during the Executive Session. Alongside the Session, the SBPS Protected Area Management Plan (PAMP) and Enforcement Protocol was turned over by Protect Wildlife Chief-of-Party Rebecca Paz to the DENR XII and PAMB-SBPS through the SBPS Technical Working Group through CENRO Kiamba Dr. Ali Hadjinasser and DENR XII RED Dr. Sabdullah C. Abubacar. The Summit ended with the LGUs and Enforcement NGAs affirming their support in the operations of the SBPSLEG to enforce ENR and Protected area laws for the conservation of SBPS.

At Thursday morning, March 05, 2020, all sixty-eight (68) coastal barangays and 7 Coastal Municipal/City LGUs of SBPS, as well as LGU-Sarangani Province, NGAs, NGOs/POs, private industries, local communities, and other protected area stakeholders worked hand-in-hand at the Simultaneous Baywide Cleanup of the whole SBPS, stretching from Glan, Sarangani Province to Maitum, Sarangani Province. Beyond the shoreline, cleanup teams utilized scoop nets to collect floating plastic debris in the middle of the bay. sbps candidatesBy late afternoon, twelve (12) female candidates from all over SBPS vied for the title of the Ambassadress of SBPS. Beyond beauty, grace, and poise, the candidates must also showcase their advocacy and project which they intend to implement to help in the promotion and conservation of SBPS.

March 05 was declared as the yearly celebration of SBPS Day by the PAMB-SBPS, in honor of its historical proclamation as protected seascape on March 05, 1996 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 756. Now at its 24th Anniversary ever since its founding, the DENR XII and PAMB-SBPS look forward to bigger and more inclusive come 2021.
